Parade
Fifteen years ago, when we started First Night in our town, we saw a film about Boston’s First Night, which hired a group of craftsmen in Boston that conducted work-shops in making gigantic walking puppets with paper mache’ heads.
We saw no reason why we could not do this ourselves! We approached the Art Department in the Middle School and our first 4 walking puppets, representing the four seasons, were created by the students and teacher Robin Cornwell.
Fourteen years and a couple changes of clothes later, the seasons are still being marched down Wolfeboro’s Main Street at 5:15 pm. on New Years Eve! But over the years, the puppet family has grown with a couple local puppet-making workshops, conducted by Jerome Holden.
We now have dragons, a wolf, a flock of penguins, a swimming fish, princesses, a pussy-cat, clowns, Father Time and Baby New Year, just to name a few.
The parade assembles at the First Christian Church across from the Wolfeboro Inn and saunters with flashlight carrying attendants and noise-making to dockside, just in time for the fireworks over Wolfeboro Bay.
